Showing The SS Some Love

For whatever reason I’ve neglected and just kinda generally been down on my Single Speed for most of this year. I had alot of fun on it the prior year but for some reason it just kinda fell out of favor with me lately.

After walking by it a hundred times or more in my Bike Room I finally decided to at least do some much needed maintenance work on it. I ended up taking it into the shop with me when working over the weekend so I could get it done. Once I got into the project I realized that of all my bikes this one has the coolest history and stories behind it.

First off, the way in which I acquired it to begin with is a great story and brings back some fun memories. My buddy Pete found the bike on MTBR and to make a long story short we ended up taking an impromptu road trip to NJ to pick her up. To make it really interesting it decided to snow the weekend of our trip which REALLY made it fun. In addition to the origins of the bike itself a few of the parts have cool histories. The Fox fork that is currently on my bike came off Pete’s Truth before he offloaded it. So me picking it up for my SS was kinda like keeping it in the family. That fork has been to Fruita more times than I have :) Speaking of Fruita that’s were the headset cap came from. I also took the bike on what has been my hands down favorite trip out to Fruita so far. Last but not least was the 05 SSWC that I attened on this bike. In fact it was really the whole reason I bought the bike in the first place.

So with so many good memories associated with the bike I had to show it some love and get her back up and running. I ended up pulling the cranks, EBB and old headset first. I then applied Frame Saver which I had neglected to do. Luckily while a little dirty there was no serious rust issues yet. Once I applied the frame saver I cleaned up the EBB greased it and reinstalled it and the cranks. I replaced the old crappy headset with an extra King one I had laying around. I trued up the wheels and even added a slightly shorter stem to try and make the ride fit me a bit better. I spent a few hours tinkering on the bike and thinking about all the fun times associated with it. Now I’m not really sure why I stopped riding it.

So today I’m going to try and hit the trails on the Haro, good memories in tow for some Single Speeding goodness. Pop’s bringing his SS down so it’ll be a fun afternoon to make some new memories on my trust SS.
